Lower Key Stage 2

Welcome to Lower Key Stage 2.  Year 2/3 is taught by Mrs Coupland and Miss Edgar and Year 4 is taught by Miss Millward. The children are also supported by a team of teaching assistants throughout their day.

Curriculum

Rationale

In our current structure of mixed-age classes, it is essential to provide a coherent and high-quality education that aligns with national curriculum expectations while being tailored to the developmental and academic needs of all pupils. Our approach aims to ensure continuity, appropriate challenge, and targeted support across all year groups within each class. To achieve this, teachers will deliver the higher year group’s curriculum content, with planned and scaffolded adaptations to meet the needs of younger or less confident learners.

Y2/Y3 Mixed Class Plan

Curriculum Coverage: The Year 3 curriculum will be the primary driver across all subjects, ensuring progression and appropriate challenge. Differentiation and adaptation will be made where necessary to support the Year 2 pupils and varying abilities within the class.

Phonics: Year 2 pupils will complete the bridging phonics unit during the first term to consolidate their phonic knowledge and transition smoothly into more complex spelling and reading work.

Writing and Reading: Pupils will use the Year 3 Ready Steady Write scheme with support and scaffolding provided for Year 2 pupils to access these materials effectively. For reading we will use the Y2 or 3 Reading Explorers, depending on ability and available adult support.

Maths: We will follow the White Rose Mixed Y2/Y3 plan, which is specifically designed to accommodate the curriculum requirements of both year groups. As with all subjects, differentiation / adaptation will ensure all children are working within the current stage of development.

Planning: We will follow the long-term and medium-term plans as they stand, with professional judgement used to adapt where appropriate based on formative assessments.

Sporting Events and Enrichment Activities: We will share out the sporting events for KS1/2 across the year and prioritise sporting events that match our PE curriculum at that specific time

This clarity will support consistent planning, appropriate grouping, and equitable access for pupils.
